Boise Mayor David Bieter and Boise State President Bob Kustra will participate in a dedication event at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 16 to recognize the university becoming the first customer of geothermal heat on the south side of the Boise River.
The ceremony to dedicate the use of environmentally friendly geothermal heat for several buildings on campus will occur outside of the Capitol Boulevard entrance on the west side of the Micron Business and Economics Building.
A ?steamy? demonstration will allow people to see and touch the geothermal-heated water. City officials will have their geothermal model on display along with maps and information about the geothermal district heating system that has been in operation since 1983. In the course of a year, the system circulates more than 190 million gallons of water through approximately 13 miles of pipeline.
Geothermal has been extended to the Boise State campus and carried across the river underneath the Capitol Street bridge.?The Micron Business and Economics?Building was the first on campus to be built to use geothermal heat, using the?geothermal return water ? basically?free?heat ? to provide snow melting to the main entries and courtyard.?Geothermal heat is among the many green features that make the Micron Business and Economics Building almost 50 percent more energy efficient than buildings built to current energy codes.
