Apr. 19, 2013 ? The greatest threat of a tsunami for the U.S. east coast from a nearby offshore earthquake stretches from the coast of New England to New Jersey, according to John Ebel of Boston College, who presented his findings today at the Seismological Society of America 2013 Annual Meeting.
The potential for an East Coast tsunami has come under greater scrutiny after a 2012 earthquake swarm that occurred offshore about 280 kilometers (170 miles) east of Boston. The largest earthquake in the 15-earthquake swarm, most of which occurred on April 12, 2012, was magnitude (M) 4.0.
In 2012 several other earthquakes were detected on the edge of the Atlantic continental shelf of North America, with magnitudes between 2 and 3.5. These quakes occurred off the coast of southern Newfoundland and south of Cape Cod, as well as in the area of the April swarm. All of these areas have experienced other earthquake activity in the past few decades prior to 2012.
The setting for these earthquakes, at the edge of the continental shelf, is similar to that of the 1929 M7.3 Grand Banks earthquake, which triggered a 10-meter tsunami along southern Newfoundland and left tens of thousands of residents homeless.
Ebel's preliminary findings suggest the possibility than an earthquake-triggered tsunami could affect the northeast coast of the U.S. The evidence he cites is the similarity in tectonic settings of the U.S. offshore earthquakes and the major Canadian earthquake in 1929. More research is necessary, says Ebel, to develop a more refined hazard assessment of the probability of a strong offshore earthquake along the northeastern U.S. coast.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A star-studded crowd gathered to celebrate the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees on Thursday, as Oprah Winfrey and Usher gathered to pay homage to the likes of Donna Summer, Quincy Jones, Randy Newman and Rush.
Disco queen Summer, producer Jones and comedy-rock singer Newman were inducted along with Canadian progressive rock band Rush, blues guitarist Albert King, hip hop pioneers Public Enemy, rockers Heart and veteran producer Lou Adler.
Television personality and media mogul Winfrey, who said she was discovered by veteran R&B producer Jones when he cast her in "The Color Purple" in 1985, praised his decades-long career, during which he launched stars such as the late Michael Jackson.
"He defines the word legend, he is remarkable and everybody knows it," Winfrey said.
"I continue to be amazed at what goes on in his head ... he's of this time and so far ahead of this time," she added as she present Jones, 80, with his induction trophy.
"Queen of Disco" Summer, who died last May aged 68, was inducted by singer Kelly Rowland, who praised Summer's career for paving the way for female artists
"Her words remind us of exactly who we are," she said.
Summer's husband and daughters were on hand to accept her trophy and singer Jennifer Hudson got the crowd on their feet singing Summer's hits "Bad Girls" and "Last Dance".
Newman, 69, kicked off the night with "I Love LA", joined on stage by musicians Tom Petty, Jackson Browne and John Fogerty and later performed his songs "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" and "I'm Dead" with former Eagles member Don Henley.
Henley, who inducted Newman, criticized the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for its delay in including Newman, calling it "one of those inductions long overdue, in fact, shamefully overdue."
Newman was less critical, saying he was "glad" to be inducted while he was still alive.
"I always wanted to be respected by musicians ... it means a great deal to me that the people I respect are giving me respect," Newman said.
TRIBUTE TO THE BLUES
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter John Mayer paid homage to late pioneering American blues guitarist Albert King, who died in 1992 aged 69.
"The blues is in every undercurrent of the music that I play ... Albert is forever embedded in that music," Mayer said.
Seattle rockers Heart, fronted by sister duo Nancy and Ann Wilson, were inducted by Chris Cornell and performed their hits "Barracuda" and "Butterfly".
"Equality is coming right along. For us, music is the real church, it's a life calling, it's bigger than men and women put together, music makes us all equal and human," Nancy said.
Canadian progressive rockers Rush had the largest number of fans in the Nokia theater, receiving rousing standing ovations as they were inducted by Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins.
The night's longest speech went to Public Enemy's eccentric rapper Flavor Flav, who giggled and rambled as he talked about the influence of his group's music.
Public Enemy - comprising rappers Flavor Flav, Chuck D, Professor Griff and DJ Lord - were influential in bringing a political and social conscience to hip hop in the 1980s.
"We all come from the damn blues. Let's not get it twisted. We studied the forms of music in DJ culture ... we've always known and paid respect to where music comes from," Chuck D said.
The hip hop collective also sampled music from Summer, Jones and Rush as they performed their tracks "Bring The Noise", "911 is a Joke" and the seminal "Fight The Power".
To be eligible for induction in 2013, a candidate must have released their debut album or single at least 25 years earlier. The ceremony will be televised on HBO on May 18.
The eight inductees were chosen by some 500 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, which includes past inductees and for the first time, allowed fans to vote.

SAN FRANCISCO?? Yahoo's Internet advertising revenue crumbled further during the first three months of the year, renewing doubts about the company's turnaround efforts despite a surge in earnings.
The results released Tuesday seemed to dim some of the aura surrounding Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who was lured away from a top job at Google Inc. nine months ago to revive revenue growth at a company that has been mired in a malaise for years.
Mayer, though, assured analysts that her plans are falling into place. She characterized her strategy as a "series of sprints" that will eventually produce a "chain reaction" of more appealing online services, more engaged users and, eventually, more advertising sales. She cautioned it will be several more years before Yahoo is growing anywhere near the rate as other major Internet players such as Google and Facebook.
"We are on course to do what we said we would do: stabilize and grow with the market," Mayer said during a Tuesday conference call.
There have been signs of encouragement since Mayer's arrival, most notably the first increase in Yahoo's annual revenue since 2008. Although the 2012 gain was just 2 percent, it raised hopes that growth would accelerate this year.
Instead, Yahoo's total revenue shrank by 7 percent in the latest quarter from the same time last year.
The weak spot was in one of Yahoo's former strengths ? display advertising. After subtracting the commissions that Yahoo pays its partners, the company's display advertising revenue fell by 11 percent from last year to $402 million. That development suggests that Yahoo is losing more ground in a key area of Internet advertising to Google Inc., which already dominates search advertising, and Facebook Inc., whose online social network is becoming a more powerful marketing magnet.
Yahoo's revenue from ads appearing alongside search results rose 6 percent from last year, excluding commissions. But that wasn't enough to prevent a 3 percent decline in Yahoo's total ad revenue, minus commissions.
On the plus side, Yahoo's first-quarter earnings climbed 36 percent to top analyst estimates. But much of the higher profit flowed from investments such as Yahoo's 24 percent stake in Alibaba Group, a rapidly growing Internet company in China. Yahoo's earnings from its investments totaled nearly $216 million in the first quarter, outstripping its operating income of $186 million.
"They are making more money (as) an investment house," BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said.
Yahoo also is benefiting cost-cutting measures imposed by some of the five other CEOs, including interim leaders, who have run the company since mid-2007.
Investors seemed more dismayed with the downturn in Yahoo's display advertising than the growth in earnings. Yahoo's stock fell $1.08, or 4.5 percent, to $22.71 in extended trading. The shares had been up by more than 50 percent since Mayer's arrival.
Yahoo Inc. earned $390 million, or 35 cents per share, in the first quarter, compared with $286 million, or 23 cents per share, at the same time last year.
If not for expenses covering employee stock compensation and certain other costs, Yahoo said it would have earned 38 cents per share. That was well above the average estimate of 25 cents per share among analysts surveyed by FactSet.
Revenue totaled $1.14 billion, down from $1.22 billion at the same time last year.
After subtracting ad commissions, Yahoo's revenue stood at $1.07 billion, about $30 million below analyst projections.
Analysts accepted Mayer's assessment that change will take time.
"You have to remember that turnarounds take a long time and we are still in the early innings of that," Gillis said.
Some of Mayer's predecessors also had stressed that it would take years for Yahoo to snap out of its financial funk.
Gartner analyst Andrew Frank noted that first-quarter earnings were stronger than expected and "they didn't miss revenue by a lot." He called the results positive overall and said he didn't see any alarming signs.
Mayer, 37, has been trying to make Yahoo's online services more compelling in hopes that the improvements will encourage Web surfers to visit more frequently and stay for longer. That would help Yahoo sell more advertising to marketers who have been funneling more of their online budgets to Google and Facebook. Mayer also has been trying to recast Yahoo's services so they are better suited for the growing audience consuming content on smartphones and tablet computers.
As part of a makeover under Mayer, Yahoo has redesigned its home page, email service and Flickr photo-sharing service. The company, which is based in Sunnyvale, Calif., also has made a series of small acquisitions aimed primarily at attracting more engineers with expertise in mobile applications and social networking.
Mayer told analysts that her efforts to infuse Yahoo with more talent and energy are paying off. She said the number of candidates applying for jobs has doubled and the attrition rate has been cut in half from a year ago.
Despite those changes, Yahoo still appears to be falling further behind its biggest rivals in the Internet ad market. Google's ad revenues have been climbing by about 20 percent in recent quarters while Facebook's has been surging by about 40 percent. Google is scheduled to report its first-quarter results Thursday, while Facebook plans to post its numbers on May 1.
Yahoo still has a long way to go just to attain Mayer's goal of matching the growth of the overall Internet ad market. In Yahoo's main market, the U.S., the company's ad revenue this year is expected to increase by about 3 percent, according to the research firm eMarketer. That contrasts with an anticipated 25 percent gain in overall spending on digital ads in the U.S. this year, eMarketer said.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? A bomb planted in a bus killed at least eight passengers and wounded seven others in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, police said.
The explosion happened when the bus was passing through a crowded bazar on its way from Peshawar to a nearby town, police official Fazal Wahid Khan said.
He said the dead and injured included women and children, and authorities had transported them to a government hospital.
Bus driver Jehanghir Khan, who was not hurt, told reporters that the device had been planted under a seat.
"I didn't see any suspicious person. I don't know who planted this bomb. I was passing through the bazar of Matni when I suddenly heard the blast," he said. He said the blast damaged some shops nearby, as well as the bus.
No one immediately claimed responsibility.
Peshawar is the capital of troubled Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province that borders Afghanistan. Security forces have carried out several offensives against Pakistani Taliban and other militant groups there.

With the NFL Draft approaching, we?re taking a team-by-team look at the needs of each club. Up next is the team with the No. 14 overall selection, the Carolina Panthers. They?re short a third- and a seventh-rounder from trades made before he got there, so new general manager Dave Gettleman needs to make every pick count.
Offensive tackle: If Marty Hurney was still the general manager, you could probably bank on an offensive lineman with one of their first two picks, as he leaned heavily toward building a strong line. But since Gettleman doesn?t have background of his own, his history with the Giants points away from using first-rounders on tackles.
The Panthers restructured left tackle Jordan Gross?s contract to make it effectively a one-year deal, and there?s no one on the roster close to being able to replace him. Right tackle Byron Bell is a try-hard guy who has filled in admirably, but they could upgrade there without much effort.
But even if you?re not thinking long-term, they have a quarterback in Cam Newton that needs protecting now, and they could do better.
Cornerback: The Panthers have more nickels than a third-grade math problem, but no one on the roster you trust to point at Julio Jones and say ?sic him.?
They brought back Captain Munnerlyn, and signed Drayton Florence and D.J. Moore. That gives them a bunch of competitive, hard-working effort guys who are going to get thrown over the top of with great regularity.
After cutting the under-appreciated Chris Gamble, they need someone who can step up and play man coverage, and using the first-rounder on someone such as Xavier Rhodes from Florida State makes as much sense as anything else they?d do.
Safety: Finances have tied them to the OK Charles Godfrey at one spot, but there?s a vacancy next to him. They tried bringing in veteran Haruki Nakamura to push former second-rounder Sherrod Martin, but all that yielded was Falcons highlights.
They?ve taken a long look at the top safeties during the pre-draft process, and using one of their first two picks on one shouldn?t be a surprise.
Defensive tackle: This is a popular pick for them, but they just re-signed Dwan Edwards. That?s the same Dwan Edwards they signed last September, after the Bills cut him. The Panthers need help at the position, but the bust rate on drafted DTs is historically high, and they can?t afford to miss without a full deck of picks.
Wide receiver: The perpetual search for a complement to Steve Smith has become a search for an eventual replacement for the Panthers star.
Smith?s still good enough to be the guy, and frankly, Brandon LaFell is good enough to be the second option (his three-year stats are nearly identical to former Panthers wideout Muhsin Muhammad at the same stage).
But if they draft a receiver in the first round, it will begin the end of the Smith era in Charlotte, as the last wave of contracts given out by the previous administration start to be culled by the new guy.
The Panthers are in an interesting spot, because their finish showed they?re good enough to compete, if not necessarily contend.
But 2-8 starts the last two years under coach Ron Rivera (along with being 2-12 in games decided by a touchdown or less) has created an uncertain environment, where almost every player and coach in the building?s on a de facto one-year contract.
If they deliver on potential, the current core of players could have a few more years. If they don?t, a year from now you?ll recognize Cam Newton, Ryan Kalil, Luke Kuechly and not much else.

HAVANA (AP) ? Visitors to the elite feeder school for Cuba's renowned National Ballet might be forgiven for thinking they're suddenly seeing triple.
Identical triplets Angel, Cesar and Marcos Ramirez wear matching black leotards and white socks as they leap, prance and twirl across the linoleum floor of the mirrored studio. They share the same wiry build, olive complexion, mussed hairstyles and coffee-colored eyes. And they speak the same fast-paced Spanish in the high-pitched voice of children.
Even their instructors have trouble telling the Ramirez boys apart, but they say the 13-year-olds have already separated themselves from their peers technically and artistically, and all three have the talent to make a big splash in the ballet world when they grow up.
If they succeed, they will join a long line of celebrated dancers trained in Cuba, where fans from every social stratum follow the careers of ballet stars like Carlos Acosta and Rolando Sarabia as closely as those of baseball players or boxers.
"I want to be a dancer. The National Ballet of Cuba turns out great male dancers," said Marcos, sweat dripping from his face after a recent workout in the steamy studio as his brothers nodded in agreement. "And go on tour in many countries and travel the world by dancing."
Toward that end, the Ramirez brothers spend 12 hours a day at the National School of Ballet, housed in a graceful, cream-porticoed building that occupies a full half-block in colonial Old Havana. Classes include not only dance, but more mundane subjects like language, math and history.
A former social club with broad hallways and a majestic marble staircase, this is where the creme de la creme of young dancers from across the country train for a shot at stardom.
The school was founded seven decades ago by famed prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, now age 92, who is probably the most recognized person in Cuba not named "Castro."
"This school means a lot to us," Angel said. "It gives us the training to graduate as ballet dancers, which is the thing we want most."
While the odds are tough, Mirlen Rodriguez, a 24-year-old teacher and former student at the school, says the brothers all have a chance of making their careers onstage.
"They are at a level that is beyond high," Rodriguez said.
The three have already beaten long odds simply by being born.
According to 2010 data compiled by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, only 0.14 percent of births that year were triplets or higher-order multiple births.
Naturally born identical triplets, involving a single egg separating into three fetuses rather than multiple eggs being fertilized, are much rarer.
Mothers of Supertwins, a U.S. nonprofit group that provides support, education and research on higher-order multiple births, says about one of every 62,500 pregnancies results in identical triplets ? or 0.0016 percent.
The Ramirezes, born into a family that lives in the gritty neighborhood of Center Havana, say they are extremely close.
In conversation they often finish each other's thoughts. They also seem to have fun with their uniqueness, introducing themselves to a reporter as if their relationship wasn't apparent.
"My name is Angel Jesus Ramirez Castellanos, and I'm 13 years old," the first said with a sly smile, followed in turn by the others:
"My name is Marcos Abraham Ramirez Castellanos, and I'm 13 years old."
"My name is Cesar Josue Ramirez Castellanos, and I'm 13 years old."
While some identical siblings find it difficult to carve out their own identities, the Ramirezes say they relish their tripleness.
"For me it's a real stroke of luck being a triplet, being able to count on my brothers," Cesar said. "The disadvantage is that sometimes they scold you or correct you for something that another one did."
Instructors rely on tricks to tell them apart.
"There's one that has a little mark above the eyebrow. Another one gets dimples when he laughs," Rodriguez said.
"Then there's another that doesn't have dimples or a mole. During exams you have to put one of them there, another one here, the other way over there, and they have to stay in that formation."
She added, however, that while the boys share the same DNA and have been trained by the same instructors, they have unique personalities that show up in their dance. One is more mischievous, another more serious, the third the most talkative.
"They have the same physical form, the same configuration of legs and arms, but in their minds, each one is unique," Rodriguez said.
The triplets say they fell in love with dance in 2007 when their mother took them to a performance of "The Nutcracker," which is put on every Christmas season and costs just pennies to attend.
All three said it never occurred to them to worry about being teased for taking up dance. Ballet is broadly popular in Cuba, and the idea of a man donning a leotard has remarkably little stigma attached to it for a society that in other ways retains some macho attitudes.
The Ramirezes enrolled in the ballet school at age 10 after passing a rigorous exam and being selected over dozens of other children with similar dreams. More than 300 boys and girls train here in eight different grades, all hoping to make it to the National Ballet.
"It's a virus that can't be cured with antibiotics," said Ramona de Saa, the school's director. "And all that passion can be felt in the school."
The grueling day runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mornings are devoted to traditional school subjects, while afternoons are for perfecting demi plies and barre work.
"One, two, three, four!" an instructor's voice called out during a recent rehearsal as the Ramirezes twirled around and around on tiptoe. "Again!"
"It's a career that requires a lot of sacrifice. It takes away much of your childhood," Rodriguez said. "While others maybe are at home watching cartoon movies, they have to be at rehearsal."

In 2012, four countries that had not used the death penalty in several years were on Amnesty International's list. Missing was China, which keeps its figures secret but is estimated to far outpace others in executions.
By Ryan Lenora Brown,?Correspondent / April 11, 2013
The number of executions carried out globally has dropped steadily over the past decade, but that downward momentum stalled in 2012, according to a report released Wednesday by Amnesty International.

The organization recorded 682 executions around the world last year, up two from 2011. That tally included executions in four countries that had not used the death penalty in several years ? India, Japan, Pakistan, and Gambia ? and a doubling of the number of executions in Iraq, from 68 in 2011 to 129 in 2012.
?The regression we saw in some countries this year was disappointing, but it does not reverse the worldwide trend against using the death penalty,? said Salil Shetty, Amnesty?s secretary general, in a statement.
Since 2003, Amnesty reports, the number of countries using the death penalty has dropped from 28 to 21, and the number of countries that have completely abolished the penalty has risen from 80 to 97.
The organization?s data, however, exhibit one glaring omission: They do not include figures for China, widely believed to execute more people than all other countries in the world combined. The Chinese government considers execution figures a state secret, but Chinese human rights watchdog Dui Hua estimates that the country kills up to 5,000 people each year for a wide spectrum of offenses, including drug trafficking and financial crimes. (To learn more about controversy surrounding the death penalty in China, read about the wealthy businesswoman originally sentenced to death for failing to repay investor loans last year.)
Trailing China in Amnesty?s top five ?executing countries? in 2012 were Iran (314), Iraq (129), Saudi Arabia (79), and the United States (43). Together those five countries accounted for four of every five executions recorded globally last year.?
Indeed, only 10 percent of the world?s countries use the death penalty in a given year, the Amnesty report notes, the vast majority clustered in the Middle East and East Asia. A few of those countries, notably North Korea, are widely believed to execute far more than the number they publicly record (North Korea reported 6 executions in 2012).?
While the report noted that the number of US states conducting executions fell from 13 in 2011 to nine in 2012, the total number of uses of the death penalty in the country remained constant. One-third of executions in the US (15) occurred in Texas.
Several high-profile executions and death penalty sentences have already become global flashpoints in 2013. In January, for instance, Saudi Arabia sparked international outrage for beheading a Sri Lankan woman charged at age 17 with killing a child left in her care.
The same month, an Indonesian court sentenced a British woman to death for drug trafficking (she claims to have been intimidated into the crime by a gang).?
And in March, prosecutors in the US state of Colorado announced they would seek the death penalty for James Holmes, the man accused of killing 12 people at a movie theater in a Denver suburb last summer.

A surprising mix of apelike and humanlike features from head to toe supports a controversial contention that a 2-million-year-old member of the human evolutionary family gave rise to the genus Homo, an international team of researchers reports in six papers published April 12 in Science.
Anthropologist Lee Berger of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and his colleagues assigned two partial skeletons and other fossils found in a South African cave in 2008 to a species they named Australopithecus sediba. Among the group?s new findings: A. sediba?s teeth suggest that this hominid evolved into a Homo species but had no links to earlier East African hominids often regarded as Homo ancestors. Those hominids include 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis, best known for Lucy?s partial skeleton. A. sediba?s relatively long arms were suited to hanging out in trees, consistent with its narrow, apelike upper rib cage. But these hominids also had narrow, humanlike lower rib cages and lower backs that were longer and more flexible than those of people today. A. sediba probably walked awkwardly with its feet rolling inward and slightly pigeon-toed.Citations

I once wrote about food photography magic and the tale of two pizzas that were crafted very differently for me as an unknown diner and for our photographer. As we prepared to print this review for Seven Lamps, we ran into a similar situation. Behold the gorgeous cannelloni prepared for Becky Stein, our photographer, and my hazy, hastily snapped iPhone shot. Even though my photography could use a little magic, the dish has been tweaked, no longer bearing the apricot-hued pur?e that I describe in the review.
You can read about that pur?e in the?Seven Lamps restaurant review.

DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe)
10 April, 2013 - GANT, the world's leading high-speed research and education network managed and operated by DANTE in Cambridge, UK, will be providing data links to the International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC), in Rokkasho, Japan.
IFERC hosts the Helios supercomputer, a system with a compute power exceeding 1 PFlops and attached to a storage capacity of 50 PB. The Helios supercomputer is provided and operated by the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), France and is a Fusion for Energy (F4E) resource. **
GANT is supplying a 10Gbps (10 Gigabits per second) link to connect Helios with scientists involved in ITER and DEMO, the demonstration fusion reactor which is considered the follow-on project* of ITER.
It is hoped, after the first fusion plasmas of ITER in Cadarache, France, planned for 2020 and beyond, that DEMO, an industrial demonstration fusion reactor, will lead to full-scale fusion energy reaching the commercial market in the second half of the century.
Massive data sets
HELIOS is producing vast amounts of data, which need to be shared with scientists all over the world. Via SINET, a Japanese National Research and Education Network (NREN), IFERC is connected to the pan-European GANT network, and to European NRENs, like RENATER, DFN, SWITCH, JANET and many others), supporting the research activities for fusion in Europe.
The GEANT-provided link is a 10Gbps connection between Geneva and Washington, matching the 10Gbps link between Japan and Washington provided by SINET. It will enable researchers in Europe to access this dedicated supercomputer in Japan. It may eventually be used to complement also the network resources allocated to other large scale projects, such as the CERN LHC experiment.
Says GANT Business Solutions Consultant, Roberto Sabatino; "The combination of major new scientific projects like IFERC and the use of supercomputers like Helios is creating an explosion of data for which we need to be ready. The provision of a 10Gbps link is a first and crucial step to support the data networking needs in the global search for cleaner, sustainable energy and to assist scientists in their ground-breaking work."
Transporting high-volumes of traffic
Together with ever-growing data sets, greater collaboration in areas such as energy and genetics is driving a growing demand to access shared central databases of information across research disciplines, exponentially increasing network traffic.
In the past, the most practical method for transferring bulk data from geographically dispersed clusters and end users was to physically ship disks by courier. With high speed networks such as GANT, data from many different sources can quickly be shared and analysed leading to accelerated results.
Europe's vision for sustainable energy
The ITER project is funded by and run by seven parties Europe (contributing 45% of the cost), India, Japan, China, Russia, South Korea and the US. DEMO studies are carried out by individual ITER members, and in the case of Japan and Europe, jointly in the IFERC, in the framework of the Broader Approach Agreement. The investment in fusion research is in line with the EU's focus for Horizon 2020 to find new and convincing solutions to the societal challenge of secure, clean and efficient energy. GANT is seen as an essential component in driving European ICT and for Europe to remain competitive in dealing with society's grand challenges.
Says Susana Clement Lorenzo, F4E Group Leader for IFERC: "Helios users are running codes ranging from fundamental physics in hot ITER plasmas to technology and engineering calculations so as to build components in very challenging environments as expected in DEMO. Supercomputers are crucial in solving these complex problems and good data communication channels such as the high-speed GANT network can provide the essential links to help scientists all over the world to analyse their findings. Ultimately, all these initiatives will bring us a step closer to fusion as a potential energy source"
Big science reliant on high-speed networks
IFERC joins many other big science projects supported by GANT which are changing the way the world collaborates. Examples include CERN's Large Hadron Collider and global projects addressing climate change, medical diagnosis, bioinformatics and deep space research.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Four Japanese automakers including Toyota Motor Corp , Nissan Motor Co and Honda Motor Co are recalling a total of about 3.4 million vehicles worldwide as a result of an airbag problem, the companies said on Thursday.
Japanese auto parts maker Takata Corp spokesman Toyohiro Hishikawa said the company supplied the airbags related to the recalls.
Toyota is recalling about 1.73 million vehicles globally, including 580,000 vehicles in North America and 490,000 vehicles in Europe because some airbags at the front seat next to the driver may not inflate when necessary, spokesman Ryo Sakai said.
No injuries or deaths have been reported, he said.
Toyota will exchange the faulty inflator with new ones, a fix that is expected to take about an hour to two and a half hours for most models, he said. He declined to give the costs related to the recall.
Honda said it is recalling around 1.14 million vehicles worldwide. Nissan said it is recalling about 480,000 vehicles globally, while Mazda Motor Corp said it is recalling about 45,500 vehicles.
Takata has been informed that carmakers will recall about 2 million vehicles globally due to problems with airbags it had supplied, but not 3.4 million, said Hishikawa. Its shares dropped 9 percent to 1,819 yen on Thursday.
